Why Sembalun is worth the trip

Sembalun is a valley village on the eastern side of Mount Rinjani, at about 1,150 m. It is cooler than the coast, and from almost anywhere in the village you can see the mountain wall and the green hills around it, with farm plots forming a patchwork across the valley floor. It is also the starting point of the most popular trail to Rinjani's 3,726 m summit, so you can choose a big adventure or a relaxed one without changing base. Trekking Mount Rinjani from Sembalun

The Sembalun trail crosses open savanna from the start and reaches the Sembalun crater rim (about 2,639 m) by late afternoon, where you camp with a sunset view over Segara Anak. The summit push starts in the early hours. The Sembalun – Torean combination adds a night beside the lake (about 2,000 m), natural hot springs and the dramatic Torean valley with Penimbungan waterfall. Sembalun without the big climb

Can beginners climb Rinjani? Yes, if you are aged 10–50, in good health and train regularly for at least two weeks beforehand. The 4-day Sembalun – Torean trip has the gentlest pace.
