Pergasingan & Nanggi Hills: Easy Treks in Sembalun
Pergasingan Hill and Nanggi Hill are two of the best-known easy hikes in Sembalun, the valley at the foot of Mount Rinjani in East Lombok. Both give you wide views on trails that are far shorter and gentler than a Rinjani climb. If you are not ready for a multi-day trek but would love a sunrise from up high, this guide is for you: which hill to choose, day hike or overnight camping, practical tips and gear rental.
What is soft trekking in Sembalun?
Soft trekking means an easy hike up one of the hills around Sembalun village (about 1,150 m). From the top you can see the valley, the village and the slopes of Rinjani without climbing to the crater. We choose the hill to suit your time and group, and a local Sembalun guide walks with you. It suits:
- First-timers who have never hiked a mountain.
- Families looking for an outdoor activity with children.
- Hikers who want a gentle warm-up before a Rinjani trek.
- Groups of friends who want a relaxed camp with a great view.
Pergasingan Hill: views over Sembalun's fields
Pergasingan is known for its view over Sembalun's patchwork of fields and farm plots, which look like a colourful mosaic from above, with the village and surrounding hills around them. The trail is short, but it is still a climbing footpath, so take it at your own pace and enjoy the view opening up behind you.

Nanggi Hill: facing Mount Rinjani
If you want the mountain in your view, choose Nanggi. The hill faces Rinjani across the valley, which makes it ideal for photos with the volcano behind you, or for a first look if you plan to climb it later. There are other hills around Sembalun too; tell us which one you have in mind and how much time you have, and we will suggest the best fit.
Day hike or sunrise camping?
Our Sembalun hill trek works two ways:
- Day hike: go up, enjoy the view and come down the same day. Good for families with children or a tight schedule.
- Overnight camping: pitch a tent on the hilltop, spend the night outdoors and wake early for the sunrise. Good for friends, couples and communities.
Camping means you are already at the top when the sky starts to brighten; a day hike is lighter on preparation and gear.

Tips for Pergasingan and Nanggi
- Wear shoes with good grip; hill trails can be dusty when dry and slippery after rain.
- Bring a jacket, as Sembalun gets cold at night and early in the morning.
- Pack a headlamp for a pre-dawn start or a night at camp.
- Carry water, snacks and a bag for your rubbish, and take all rubbish back down.
- With children, keep a relaxed pace and take plenty of breaks.
Camping gear rental and combining activities
Camping gear is not included in the hill trek, but you can rent tents, sleeping bags, jackets and gloves, headlamps and trekking poles from us. Everything is washed and checked after use and can be collected in Sembalun; confirm the items and sizes before your trip. See our gear rental and transfers guide. A sunrise camp pairs well with a Sembalun ATV ride later the same day, and if the hills leave you wanting more, read about our Rinjani trekking packages.
